Late Night Television Monsters

The tutorial for this piece is featured below... Well, not a tutorial, but shows the progress of my work.

Late Night Tutorial

Here's the steps for my latest illustration. People seem to be enjoying looking at the process. The best thing I recently learned is to stay loose and allow change. Don't start your art and not allow for changes or corrections. Keep it loose and free and you will be happy with the end results. Also if you start getting into details, stop working on it and come back to it later on. Work GENERAL to SPECIFIC.

Something different

So here is the final sketch for the Monster and Sandwich. I deleted all the steps I had on this blog and then condensed the working steps into the tutorial below. Hope it helps, but feel free to post questions.

Finished Mommy Elephant

So I finished my elephant painting. I could keep adding wrinkles, but I'm getting tired of working on it so I have to say enough is enough. So here's the finished piece.

This painted from a photograph in the book Wild Animals by Crescent publishing, Authored by David Alderton...I know this is a crummy footnote, my college professors are drawing F's on their computer screens right now.

Summer Concert in the park

I wish I could post my work from life drawing classes that I take on Sundays, but I know young kids look at this site and I don't need angry letters from parents. One Sunday I couldn't make it to life drawing classes so that evening I went to the concert in the park thinking it would be a great place to draw. Well it was a really bad place to draw. I got there late so all I could get was the back of peoples' heads. This was one guy I could draw.

Old image

This was an image I created about 4 years ago. It's fun to look back and see old work. It's important to always strive to improve and work hard to keep creating new art. Don't rest on one good piece of art.

Pen Sketch

This dude was walking outside the hospital the day my son was born. I was letting my wife have some rest and went outside the OSU hospital to get some air and draw. There was a great park where people were hanging out. This guy walked by real fast and I sketched as much as I could and made up the rest.

Another from the sketch book

This was drawn at a Starbucks while waiting for the art store next door to it to open. I don't usually hang out in coffee shops, why? Well, I hate the taste of coffee. I like how it smells, but it tastes so horrible. Another thing I can't stand the taste of is Ice Tea. Tastes like rust water and leaves to me. I know I'm weird.

More Sketchbook Journal

This was a character I drew at the Civil War reenactment two weeks ago. I wanted to draw the soldiers in uniform but they were too far away to see very well and this guy was pacing up and down the battlefield taking pictures. He was just easier to see to draw.

The Sketchbook I use is very small and easy to carry around with, also doesn't attract too much attention. It's amazing how many people will look over your shoulder while you sketch. Sometimes I'm funny about that and other times it doesn't bother me. I guess it depends on if the drawing is good or not.

Something from my sketchbook

Everything I have posted has been created on the computer so I don't want people to think I don't use good old pen and paper to draw with. These are some sketches of my dogs. Here's some advice, when drawing dogs, draw them while they are sleeping.

Marker Monster

This was created in my 15 day trial version of Sketchbook Pro 10. Now I am a huge fan of the older versions of Sketchbook Pro but this version is way better than last years.

*You can create texture brushes
*You can rotate the page
*This really wicked ruler that allows you to draw great perspective guide lines.

The price is a little over $100.00 so that's really good and you can save files as PSD's for photoshop use and maintain all of it's layers.

THis was created by drawing a very very rough sketch and then filling in all the values with the marker. Then I blurred the marker layer and sketched on top the rest of my creature details. Thus the name Marker Monster

Civil War drawing

I went to a Civil War show last Saturday and took some photos of the actors in full costume. I thought they would be fun to take home and draw. This drawing was started in Sketchbook pro and finished in Photoshop.
